Nationality: US
Expected Date of Graduation: December 2008

Hosting Site: Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL)
ORNL Program: Higher Education Research Experiences (HERE)
ORNL Division: Computational Sciences and Engineering
Mentor: David Hill
Internship Duration: June 4 – August 10 (10 weeks)

Summer Internship Description:

Ramon will be working under the supervision of Mr. David Hill and he will be involved in the SersorNet program. Ramon will be exposed to all the complex aspects of engineering sensor array components and the optimal location of sensor modules. SensorNet is a framework of sensor data that senses radiological, biological, chemical, nuclear or explosive threats and alert in “real time.” SensorNet is currently being used at Fort Bragg, Memphis, and other places around the country.

Name: Giancarlos Peña
Major: Civil Engineering
Nationality: US
Expected Date of Graduation: December 2008

Hosting Site: Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL)
ORNL Program: Higher Education Research Experiences (HERE)
ORNL Division: Nuclear Science and Technology
Mentor: M. Jonathan Haire
Internship Duration: June 4 – August 10 (10 weeks)

Summer Internship Description:

Giancarlos will be working under the supervision of Dr. Jonathan Haire at the Nuclear Science and Technology division. During this internship the team (form by college students from across the country and their mentors) will try to develop a pre-conceptual design of an air transport cask for Spent Nuclear Fuel (SNF) transportation. Air transportation of SNF is desirable because it would take less time for the waste to reach its final destination (i.e. Yucca Mountain). Different shielding materials will be examined and the loaded cask must weigh less than the lift capacity of present commercial air transports (e.g. the Boeing 747-400E aircraft).

DOE Fellows - Student Profile - Hanford Site – ALARA Center

Name: Alexander Henao
Major: Chemistry – School of Arts and Sciences
Nationality: Resident Alien
Expected Date of Graduation: December 2008

Hosting Site: Hanford Site – ALARA Center
Hanford Program: None
Hanford Division: ALARA Center
Mentor: Larry O. Waggoner

Summer Internship Description:

Alex will be working at Hanford’s ALARA Center. There, he will be involved in the development of a D&D Hotline Website. The plan is to develop a D&D website that any DOE contractor can use to read about the latest technology and get help with work planning, latest practices, tools, equipment and lessons learned. In addition, Alex will learn about radiological work in progress, so that he has a good understanding about the decommissioning, deactivation, decontamination and demolition of DOE facilities.
