FIU Welcomes Two Staff Members to New Applied Research Center

MIAMI (Dec. 28, 2005)— FIU’s Applied Research Center welcomes two new upper level staff members to its administration; Dr. Norman Munroe, Associate Director for Research Development and Adrienne Denaro, communications manager and media specialist.

The Applied Research Center (ARC) is FIU's largest externally funded applied research enterprise with over $17 million in ongoing applied research grants and contracts in areas of energy, environment, and military technologies. It employs a staff of 120 scientists, service professionals, and students. ARC will address real-world problems through multi-disciplinary applied research collaborations harnessing a broad range of academic, government, and industry partners.

In this regard, Dr. Munroe’s responsibilities include; increasing federal research funding, particularly with the Department of Energy, the Department of Defense, the Environmental Protection Agencies and other such partners. He will also head the effort to enhance collaborations between ARC researchers and the FIU academic community, in order to engage a wider variety of research projects in environmental remediation, waste management, information technology, sustainable energy and technology deployment. Dr. Munroe comes to the center from FIU’s College of Engineering and Computing where he served as the Associate Dean as well as the Chairman of the Mechanical Engineering and Materials Department for the past six years.

Dr. Munroe received his Eng.Sc.D. Process Engineering and Chemical Metallurgy from Columbia University, his M.Sc. Metallurgical Engineering from the University of British Columbia, a M.Phil. Ceramic and Mineral Engineering from the University of Leeds and a B.Sc. with Honors in Physics and Chemistry University of Dar-es-Salaam in Tanzania.
“I recognize the need to develop a better working arrangement and environment so that faculties from various engineering disciplines, as well as graduate students, can be successfully engaged in ARC’s research projects,” said Munroe, “I also intend to ensure that research deliverables are met on schedule and that graduate students satisfy their academic requirements in a timely manner.”

Also new to the Applied Research Center is Adrienne Denaro. With a diverse background in media and entertainment, her responsibilities will include; the creation of ARC’s scientific materials and publications, internal and external communications (within Florida International University, the South Florida community, ARC’s private, public and governmental partners, as well as the media.

Denaro comes from Clear Channel Broadcasting where she spent the last three years in radio advertising, event coordination and commercial copywriting. Prior to this she worked extensively in print media, television and film. She holds a Bachelors degree from the University of Miami in Communications and Psychology.

“My education is not in science, per se” Ms. Denaro pointed out, “but my goal is to fuse my background in entertainment with the fascinating innovations in engineering that ARC is developing, so that I can create informative, interesting and easy to understand articles so the rest of the world may share in the pride and knowledge that our local university, FIU, is working to change and improve our world.”
