The Applied Research Center
in FIU initiated the DOE Fellows lecture series with
Ms. Yvette Collazo, Director for the office of D&D
and Facility Engineering at DOE EM HQ.
In an effort to promote the DOE/FIU
Science & Technology Workforce Development Initiative to the general
engineering student population at FIU and to portray a role model for the current
DOE Fellows, the Applied Research Center initiated a lecture series with Ms.
Yvette Collazo. During her visit to the Applied
Research Center she was able to meet with the current DOE Fellows and learn
about their contributions to DOE related applied research projects which include
High Level Waste, Soil/Groundwater, and the D&D and Knowledge Management
Information Tools. Ms. Collazo also gave an interesting lecture entitled "Technical
Careers at DOE- A personal Perspective" where she shared her personal experience
working in the government sector specifically with the Department of Energy's
Environmental Management. Ms. Collazo ended her visit by touring ARC’s
laboratories. The labs visited included the Analytical Lab, the Sensors & Robotics
Lab, the Soil & Groundwater Lab, and our High Bay Large Scale Testing Area.
The DOE Fellows gave short presentations on their projects and explained their
involvement in the applied research efforts. Ms Collazo's heartfelt lecture was
an inspiration to our DOE Fellows and her DOE background made her a perfect candidate
to kick off the DOE Fellows Lecture Series.
