DOE's Office of Environmental Management officials visit FIU on November 13, 2008
DOE's Office
of Environmental Management officials visited FIU
on November 13, 2008. Mr. James Rispoli (Assistant Secretary
for Environmental Management), Mr. Mark Gilbertson (Deputy
Assistant Secretary for Engineering & Technology),
Ms. Yvette Collazo (Director, D&D and Facility Engineering),
and Ms. Shirley Frush ( Headquarters Technical Program
Manager) visited Florida International University (FIU)
on November 13, 2008 to participate in the 2008 DOE Fellows
Induction Ceremony, and a Memorandum of Understanding
(MOU) Signing Ceremony. These ceremonies were also attended
by FIU’s Provost (Dr. Ronald Berkman) and other
FIU administration officials including the interim Dean
for the College
of Engineering (Dr. Amir Mirmiran), and the DOE Fellows
Program Director (Dr. Leonel Lagos). During this year’s
Induction Ceremony, 13 new FIU (Science, Engineering,
and Math) minority students were inducted as DOE Fellows.
These students, along with DOE Fellows inducted last
year, will participate in “hands-on” EM related
research in the areas of decontamination & decommissioning
(D&D), waste processing, soil/groundwater research,
and Knowledge Management Information Tools. The students
will also have an opportunity to participate in summer
internship assignments at DOE National Laboratory and
DOE Sites around the Complex. Since the inception of
this program (DOE-FIU Science & Technology
Workforce Development Program),
a total of 14 DOE Fellows have participated in Summer/Fall
internships at DOE National Laboratory and DOE sites
including Oak
Ridge National Laboratory, Pacific
Northwest National Laboratory, Idaho
National Laboratory and DOE-HQ
in Washington, DC.

In addition, two new Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) were signed by
Mr. James Rispoli for DOE and Dr. Ronald Berkman for FIU. The first MOU is an extension of the original MOU for Technical Cooperation between DOE and FIU which was signed in 1995. The second MOU formalizes the DOE-FIU Science & Technology Workforce Development Program which was started in FY 2007. The second program is designed to build upon the DOE-FIU relationship to create a “pipeline” of critically needed, minority engineers and scientists specifically trained and mentored to enter the DOE workforce in technical areas of need.
The ceremonies were followed by a DOE Fellows Poster Exhibition
showcasing the DOE Fellows research accomplishments
during 2008 summer internship assignments and at the Applied
Research Center (ARC) during the 2007-2008 academic
year. Finally the DOE delegation toured the ARC facilities
and witnessed EM applied research that DOE Fellows are
conducting. Live D&D technology demonstrations were also showcased, including a demonstration and evaluation of a remote fixative spraying platform demonstrated at ARC’s Hot Cell mockup facility.
